Traffic interruption between Helsinki and Turku 24 June–28 July 2024
Due to track work, we will replace all trains between Helsinki and Turku with buses from 24 June to 28 July. Read more about the effects of the railway line interruption and the exceptional arrangements here.
Assistance service at the station
The assistance point is located by the taxi stand in front of the station. There is no shelter at the assistance point.
To book assistance service, call VR customer service for accessible travel at 0800 188 822 (free of charge, service hours Mon–Fri 5am–10pm, Sat–Sun 7am–10pm) no later than 24 hours before your departure.

The Old Great Square, the historic centre of Turku, was an important trading place and administrative centre from the 13th century to early 19th century.
In August 2022, the FTIA will start track work between Turku and Kupittaa stations. During track work, the railway line is shut off between Turku and Kupittaa, and trains to Helsinki arrive and depart from the Kupittaa station instead of Turku. Traffic between Turku and Tampere is running normally.

Smooth connections from and to the Kupittaa Station
How do I get to the Kupittaa station from the Turku city centre or vice versa? Explore different ways to start or continue your journey from the Kupittaa station. We will provide more information closer to the time of the railway line interruption.
- Turku region public transport Föli operates bus services between the Kupittaa station and Turku city centre and the neighbouring areas.
- You can find local transport stops in front of the Kupittaa train station. Bus connections 32 and 42 run to the Turku city centre and operate mainly at intervals of approximately 10 minutes. Buses 53 and 53A also go to Turku centre and operate approximately every 30 minutes.
- A bus ticket can easily be bought with contactless payment when boarding. The price of a single ticket is EUR 3.00 for adults and EUR 1.50 for children under the age of 15. Tickets are valid for 2 hours.
- There is only one zone in Föli traffic, so the same single ticket is valid for the entire Föli travel area.

- During the railway line interruption, we will arrange a replacement transport for our customers travelling to the Port of Turku. The replacement bus will take passengers from the Kupittaa station to the Port of Turku and from the Port of Turku to the Kupittaa station.
- The train ticket to or from the Port of Turku includes the right to travel on the replacement bus between the Port and the Kupittaa station. You can see the timetables of the replacement bus in the journey details and on your train ticket.
- The departure point of the replacement buses is on Joukahaisenkatu in the vicinity of the Kupittaa station. Follow the signs at the station to the departure point of the buses.
- The departure point of the replacement buses from Turku port is bus platform 7 next to track 2.
- Buses operating between Kupittaa and the port of Turku are accessible. At the busiest times, two buses may be in use, at least one of which is accessible.
- A new park-and-ride area will be opened at Kupittaa station on 16 August 2022.
- Entrance to the parking area is from Teollisuuskatu. The address of the parking area is Teollisuuskatu 16–18, Turku.
- There are over 130 parking spaces in the parking area.
- Parking costs €0.60 per hour in accordance with the terms and conditions of the City of Turku. There are ticket vending machines in the parking area where you can pay for your parking. - VR offers a taxi discount to train passengers together with Menevä and TaxiData: by showing your train ticket, you will receive a taxi journey at a 10% discount. The discount is valid to and from stations in Turku.
- VR and Hertz offer train passengers up to -15% discount on car rentals. Rent your car in advance and hop on it right at the train station after your train journey.
- Rental car discount is valid in both Turku and Kupittaa stations.

- The parking area is located on the north side of Kupittaa station. The easiest way to get to the area is through Joukahaisenkatu.
- There are a total of 88 frame-locking bicycle stands in the area, where a total of 176 normal bikes can be parked. The area is lit.

Frequently asked questions about the railway line interruption
Track work will cause changes in train traffic between Helsinki and Turku starting from August 2022. The railway line between the Kupittaa and Turku railway stations will be shut off, which is why the terminus of the trains from Helsinki destined for Turku is Kupittaa. During the railway line interruption, train tickets between Helsinki and Turku will only be sold for travel to the Kupittaa station. If your trip search (e.g. Salo–Turku) does not show results, try switching your search so that the terminus is Kupittaa instead of Turku.
For trains arriving and departing from Tampere, the Turku station is in normal use.
The duration of the track work on the Kupittaa–Turku railway section is estimated to be two years.
The railway line interruption mainly causes changes to the multi-tickets between Turku and Helsinki. No changes will be made in the multi-tickets between Turku and Tampere. If you have a valid multi-ticket between Turku and Salo/Helsinki, you can use it normally before the start of the railway line interruption in August.
When the railway line interruption starts, the use of the multi-ticket will change: the terminus for the trains from Helsinki to Turku will be Kupittaa, instead of Turku. This will have an impact on the available train connections and the booking of journeys with the multi-ticket.
If you have bought your multi-ticket through vr.fi or the VR Matkalla app, you can edit the route of your ticket when you book individual journeys with your multi-ticket. Once the railway line interruption has started, your ticket will be valid for journeys from Kupittaa to Helsinki and from Helsinki to Kupittaa.
Instructions
- Log in to your account at vr.fi or in the VR Matkalla app and proceed from the Tickets/My Tickets section to book a journey in the same way as you would normally do when booking a journey with your multi-ticket.
- In the search field that shows the route on your ticket, click Turku. In the drop-down menu, replace Turku with Kupittaa. In the VR Matkalla app, click “Done” below.
- Once the station has been changed, all train services between Kupittaa and the other station of your route will be listed in the search results and you can choose the service that suits you best.
If you have bought your multi-ticket through another sales channel or you cannot use your multi-ticket once the railway line interruption has started, please contact our customer service.
The railway line interruption mainly causes changes to the season tickets between Turku and Helsinki. No changes will be made in the season ticket between Turku and Tampere. If you have a valid season ticket between Turku and Salo/Helsinki, you can use it normally before the start of the railway line interruption in August.
When the railway line interruption starts, the use of the season ticket will change: the terminus for the trains from Helsinki to Turku will be Kupittaa, instead of Turku. This will have an impact on the available train connections and the seat reservation with the season ticket.
You can edit the route of your ticket in the VR Matkalla app when booking a seat with your season ticket. Once the railway line interruption has started, your ticket will be valid for journeys from Kupittaa to Helsinki and from Helsinki to Kupittaa.

Please note!
As of 18 July, multi-tickets and season tickets can no longer be purchased for journeys between Turku and Helsinki (or intermediate stops such as Salo). Instead, multi-tickets and season tickets are available for journeys between Kupittaa and Helsinki. Before the start of the railway line interruption, Kupittaa–Helsinki tickets are also valid for travel between the Turku Central Railway Station and Helsinki.
- Train traffic between Tampereen and Turku and Turku Port continues as usual during the the railway line interruption.
- Trains depart from track 7 or 17. Platform 17 is located next to Logomo, on the opposite side of the track yard from the station.

If there is space in the luggage compartment of the bus, you can take your bike with you. Please note that it is not possible to book a place for a bike in advance.
If there is no room for your bike on the bus, you can travel on the next departure with your original ticket.

Tickets are not sold on the buses, but must be purchased in advance. You can buy tickets from e.g. vr.fi, the VR Matkalla app, R-kioski or ticket vending machines.
Unfortunately, replacement buses do not have accessible travel services. If all trains on your travel date have been replaced with a bus due to track work, we will arrange an accessible taxi for you. Contact our free accessible travel service by calling 0800 188 822, and we will help you!
Unfortunately, the replacement buses do not have child seats and the seat belts on the buses might not be suitable for securing child seats.
Replacement buses have limited space for baggage. Pets are allowed to travel with their owner on replacement buses for a pet charge. Guide, assistance and hearing dogs travel free of charge.

If there are a lot of advance bookings for a bus, we may have had to remove the departure from sales in order to ensure that the buses have sufficient capacity. The bus will run normally, but you will no longer be able to buy new tickets for the departure.
If you do not have a ticket yet, you can travel on another connection. Buy your ticket in advance since tickets are not sold aboard the buses.
The buses replacing long-distance trains will continue from Kupittaa to Turku Central Railway Station and, around the departure and arrival times of ships, also to the Port of Turku and vice versa.
