Impacts of the Tampere railway station area project on train traffic

The renovation of Tampere’s railway station area will cause changes to train traffic during weekends in spring 2025. Day trains will be replaced by buses between Tampere and Seinäjoki, Tampere and Pori and Tampere and Parkano. The track work will also cause changes and cancellations in night train traffic.

Track work bus routes and travel times

Tampere-Parkano

Day trains will be replaced by buses between Tampere and Parkano on April 26, May 17-18, May 24-25 and 31, June 1. Track work bus B01 will run between Tampere and Parkano. All buses will stop in Parkano. The journey from Parkano/Tampere will continue with the connection shown on your ticket.

The travel time between Tampere and Parkano by bus is 1 hour 15 minutes.

Tampere-Seinäjoki

Day trains will be replaced by buses between Tampere and Seinäjoki on May 3-4 and May 10-11. Track work bus B01 will run primarily between Tampere and Seinäjoki. The travel time between Tampere and Seinäjoki by bus is 2 hours and 35 minutes.

On 10–11 May, the departure station or terminus of some buses will be Vaasa or Lapua. Track work bus B03 or B04 will run between Seinäjoki and Lapua. Track work bus B05 or B06 will run between Seinäjoki and Vaasa. You can find more detailed information in our journey search.

Tampere-Pori

Day trains will be replaced by buses between Tampere and Pori on April 26, May 3-4, May 10-12, May 17-18, May 24-25, May 31 and June 1.

Track work buses B01 and B02 will run between Tampere and Pori. Track work bus B01 will run directly from Tampere to Pori without stopping at any minor stations and track work bus B02 will run from Tampere to Pori and stop at minor stations.

The travel time from Tampere to Pori on the direct bus is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The travel time from Tampere to Pori on the bus stopping at minor stations is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Tampere car-carrier station

Due to the renovation of the Tampere railway yard, we will not operate any car-carriers to or from Tampere as of 16 June 2025. The car-carrier station will be closed temporarily. During the renovation, you can book a car-carrier journey departing from Pasila or Turku, instead of Tampere.

The goal of the Tampere railway station area project is to improve the functionality of the railway station area. The project aims to make switching from one means of transport to another easier, faster and more accessible. Once the project is completed, moving around the area will also be safer and more pleasant. We are standardizing service fees for ticket sales starting from March 3rd

From March 3rd, we will implement a more uniform service fee for ticket sales. The changes will affect our ticket vending machines, commuter tickets sold at R-kioskis, and our phone service. We are piloting the use of body cameras in VR’s commuter traffic

Based on customer surveys, the feeling of safety in VR’s commuter train traffic is at a very good level and train travel is perceived as safe. According to the latest customer satisfaction survey carried out at the beginning of the year, for example, the feeling of safety on our commuter trains received a grade of 4.5 on a scale of 1–5. In order to prevent and resolve individual disruptions in VR’s commuter train traffic, conductors’ use of body cameras will be piloted during the spring.
