Train is the greenest choice for travel to the North
Train is the most environmentally friendly means of travelling. You can travel by train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi and back 50 times, whereas the same amount of emissions is produced during only one round trip by car.
How to load a car onto the train?
Loading the car onto the train is easy once you have read the instructions. You can either load the car yourself or let us load it for you.
Information about car-carrier tickets
- The vehicle spot includes the direct transport of the vehicle on the night train. You can buy a vehicle spot as an additional service for a sleeper cabin or seat.
- The prices of vehicle spots depend on the size of the vehicle, the seasons, the time of the trip and the time of the booking, and are not linked to the prices of the sleeper cabins or seats. You can find the exact price for the chosen route through the trip search function.
- You can change your travel dates or vehicle space within 72 hours before the departure, either by logging in to vr.fi or by calling our customer support.
- You can update the contact details of the vehicle's contact person, registration number or other details up to 140 minutes before the departure by calling our customer support (0100 3232 (0,06 €/min 0,06 €/min + lnc/mcc, Mon-Fri 5 am – 10 pm and Sat-Sun 7 am - 10 pm)). Note that the route or direction of travel cannot be changed.
- The length and height of the vehicle space cannot be changed. If this information changes, cancel the vehicle space and book a new one with the correct dimensions through our customer service 0600 41 900 (3,55 € / answered call + lnc/mcc).
- Changes are subject to a charge of €5 per change. Changes made via VR's customer care are further subject to a service charge of €1. If you change your ticket to a more expensive train service, you need to pay the difference when you make the change. The difference is not refunded as a monetary or price refund when changing to a less expensive train service.
- The vehicle can be cancelled but no later than 72 hours before the scheduled departure of the train.
- You will be refunded the paid vehicle spot if you have purchased the vehicle's cancellation insurance cover and the cancellation takes place 72 hours before the scheduled departure of the train. The vehicle cancellation insurance fee will not be refunded.
- The vehicle can be cancelled separately from the sleeper cabin or seating tickets, which means you can cancel just the vehicle seat and still take a trip in the sleeper cabin or seating area.
- If you have purchased the vehicle's cancellation insurance, you can cancel the vehicle spot by logging in to the vr.fi website or in the VR Matkalla app.
- If you did not buy the tickets while logged in and did not buy the vehicle's cancellation insurance, please contact our customer support 0100 3232 (0,06 €/min 0,06 €/min + lnc/mcc, Mon-Fri 5 am – 10 pm and Sat-Sun 7 am - 10 pm)regarding the cancellation no later than 72 hours before the scheduled departure of the train or cancel your trip with this form., Opens in a new tab
- If you have not purchased the vehicle's cancellation insurance, the price for the vehicle spot cannot be refunded.

You will receive a ticket for the car-carrier by email as a PDF ticket. Tickets purchased through the Customer Service are delivered to you either as PDF tickets by email or as printed tickets from the service points at stations. The car-carrier ticket is valid for the service on the train and date stated on the ticket. The car space is included in the ticket, a separate voucher for the car is not needed.
Read the car transport terms and conditions carefully before your journey. If the weight of your car exceeds 2500 kg or the axle or axle-group weight exceeds 1400 kg, please contact our customer service (0600 41 900 (3,55 € / answered call + lnc/mcc)).

Tampere car-carrier station closes 16 June 2025
Due to the renovation of the Tampere railway yard, commissioned by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, we will not operate any car-carriers to or from Tampere as of 16 June 2025. The car-carrier station will remain closed until further notice. During the renovation, you can book a northbound car-carrier journey departing from Pasila or Turku, instead of Tampere.

The most popular route of all time is Helsinki–Rovaniemi, the second most popular train route is Helsinki–Kolari and Tampere–Rovaniemi is number three.
Tip for trainspotters
Take advantage of the longer stop when travelling on a train to Kolari. That's when the electric locomotive is switched to a diesel one. That's because the railway line from Kemi to Kolari is not electrified.
